How to choose a professional headshot style
A headshot style is a planning direction: a combination of setting, wardrobe, crop, expression, and visual tone. Start with the audience and destination, then choose details that still look like you. A style guide can help you write a brief, but it cannot guarantee that every generated or photographed result will reproduce each reference detail.
Match the context before the trend
Consider where the portrait will be used and what viewers need to recognize quickly. A restrained corporate style may suit an organization directory, while a creative style can leave more room for color and environment. Treat those labels as starting points, not rules for an entire profession.
Make the face easy to identify
Favor a crop that keeps the face visible at the final display size. Strong shadows, busy backgrounds, extreme camera angles, or heavy retouching can distract from recognition. If the image will appear in a small circle or square, preview that crop before publishing and keep important facial features away from the edge.
Specify observable details
A useful brief names concrete choices such as background simplicity, clothing formality, crop, lighting direction, and expression. Vague instructions like “make it professional” leave more room for interpretation. Review each result for anatomy, accessories, text, logos, clothing edges, and background artifacts instead of assuming a polished image is accurate.
Keep identity and disclosure in mind
The finished portrait should remain recognizably yours and appropriate for the destination's rules. Avoid implying a uniform, credential, workplace, or role you do not hold. When an organization or platform requires disclosure of synthetic or materially edited media, follow that policy.
